In this situation, replacing the thermos glass is generally the appropriate repair rather than replacing the entire window frame.

Before choosing a solution, inspect the problem when it is actually noticeable. During cold or windy weather, slowly move your hand around the perimeter of the door or window, including the corners and threshold. Even a slight movement of air is easier to locate under these conditions.


For an entrance door, begin by checking the top and side seals. They should be continuous, flexible, and properly compressed when the door is closed. Then inspect the door sweep and threshold. A gap beneath the door, accumulated dirt, or compressed weatherstripping may be enough to create a noticeable draft.


For a patio door, the diagnosis should also include the tracks, rollers, and locking system. A door that does not slide properly can sag slightly and no longer meet the frame as intended. Replacing the weatherstripping alone will not necessarily correct the problem if the rollers are worn or the door panel needs adjustment.


For a window, pay attention to the closing mechanism. Loose or defective hardware can prevent the sash from pressing properly against its seal. The weatherstripping may also be intact but poorly positioned, hardened, or deformed. Each cause requires a different repair.


Repairs That Deliver Real Results


Replacing weatherstripping is one of the most effective repairs when a seal has become cracked, flattened, or rigid. The correct weatherstripping profile must match the opening and the gap it needs to seal. Weatherstripping that is too thin will allow air to pass through. If it is too thick, it can make the door or window difficult to close and place unnecessary strain on the hardware.


Adjusting the hardware is equally important. On windows and doors, hinges, strike plates, locking mechanisms, and rollers directly affect the pressure applied to the seals. A professional can realign the moving panel, correct uneven closing, or replace components that are preventing the door or window from operating properly.

When a patio door sticks, rubs, or becomes difficult to lock, avoid forcing the mechanism. The rollers, track, or locking system may require repair. Restoring smooth movement and proper alignment also helps the door regain a better seal.


Finally, an insulated glass unit that is fogged, stained between the panes, or no longer providing adequate insulation can often be replaced without replacing the entire window. Simple maintenance can help preserve repairs and identify problems early. Clean the seals with a soft cloth and remove debris that has accumulated in thresholds and tracks. Avoid harsh products that can dry out rubber components or leave residue on the mechanisms.


Do not apply lubricant randomly to every moving part. Some products attract dust and can clog tracks and mechanisms. If a component squeaks, sticks, or has unusual play, it is better to have the mechanism evaluated before applying a product that may simply hide the problem rather than correct it.


You can also monitor indoor humidity during the winter. Excessive humidity increases condensation on cold surfaces even when windows are in good condition. Reducing sources of humidity and ensuring adequate ventilation can often improve comfort, but it will not repair an insulated glass unit with a failed seal.
