A thin layer of condensation on the inside of your windows in the morning may seem perfectly normal. However, if you're wondering, "Why do my windows fog up so much?", the location of the condensation already provides much of the answer. An insulated glass unit consists of two panes separated by a sealed insulating space. This seal prevents moisture from entering while reducing heat transfer. Over time, temperature changes, sunlight, and normal aging can weaken the perimeter seal, allowing humid air to enter the space between the panes.


Fogging between the panes is more than a cosmetic issue. It reduces visibility and indicates that the insulated glass is no longer performing as efficiently as it should. In some cases, the glass remains permanently fogged. In others, the cloudiness becomes more noticeable during sunny weather or changing temperatures.

When Your Windows Fog Up on the Outside


Condensation on the outside surface of your windows often surprises homeowners, especially early in the morning. In many cases, it's actually a positive sign. The exterior glass remains cool because the insulated glass is effectively preventing heat from escaping your home. When warm, humid outdoor air meets the cool glass overnight, dew naturally forms on the outside surface.


This type of condensation normally disappears as the sun warms the glass. By itself, it does not indicate a problem with your windows. However, it should not be confused with water leaks around the frame, deteriorated caulking, or persistent moisture damage around the window opening, which should be professionally inspected.


Signs That Your Window's Weather Seal Should Be Inspected


Not every fogged window requires immediate attention, but certain signs indicate it's time to have your windows evaluated:

  • Permanent fog or cloudy haze between the panes.
